Graphic colors get distored after trying to remove grey background and converting to BMP

Hello,

I have this image with a white background, and it has shadows. Here is a small part of it to give you an idea and still keep the clients privacy:

It is a png image (though I also have it in BMP). When I, after converting it to BMP in paint, upload it in SAP in SE78, it gets a grey background.
I have found several possible solutions for this:

I used GIMP to add an alpha layer, added a white background, then exported it as 24 BMP. It still gets the grey background then.
And I tried opening that in paint, saving it as 256 BMP, but then the colors get super distorted, like this:

instead of the colors smoothly transitioning from one to the other.

I tried removing the white in GIMP but that also didnt really work (mostly, probably, because GIMP is new to me and when I removed the white, the image became really vague and whitened.

Does anyone know what I could do to fix this, or where to look?
Thank you so much in advance.

Kind regards,
Romy
