Devtoberfest 2024 by the Numbers: Engagement, Badges, and Top Achievers

Devtoberfest 2024 saw over 9,000 badges earned by a community of 4,000+ developers who dove into tutorials, sessions, and challenges to expand their SAP skills. Here’s a quick look at the numbers and some interesting insights from this year’s event. A participant is defined as a user who earned at least 1 badge.

📊Participation Levels Most attendees stayed at Level 0, suggesting initial curiosity or time constraints. But 600 participants were active and achieved a wide range of levels.

Participants per Level (Excluding Level 0)

Participants per Level (Excluding Level 0)

– Level 1: 62.7% (376 participants)

– Level 2: 7.2% (43 participants)

– Level 3: 3.0% (18 participants)

– Level 4: 27.2% (163 participants)

💪Top AchieversThe highest-scoring 12 participants pulled in an impressive 68,210 points (maximum achievable points), with many collecting 150+ badges!

In my calculation 163 participants made it to level 4 (Nerdvana).

The histograms show two important views of participant engagement:

  1. Overall Distribution (Left)
  • The vast majority of participants (>3000) are in the lowest points bucket
  • There’s a sharp drop-off after the initial bucket, showing the challenge of moving beyond initial engagement
  • A small but dedicated group of participants achieved very high point totals (60,000+)
  1. Active Participants Distribution (Right)
  • When excluding the lowest bucket, we see a more nuanced distribution
  • There’s a large group of moderately engaged participants (5,000-15,000 points)
  • Several distinct clusters appear around the 30,000 and 60,000 point marks, 30,000 because level 4 started at 30,000 and 60,000 because thats the maximum number of points
  • The final spike at 60,000+ points represents our most dedicated participants

This bi-modal distribution suggests that Devtoberfest 2024 successfully created engagement at multiple levels:

  • Entry-level participants completing initial tutorials
  • Intermediate participants engaging with multiple tracks
  • High-achieving participants who completed most or all available challenges

Points per Badge Analysis

  1. Top Efficiency
  • The highest points-per-badge ratio was 1,194.29 (dries_mangelschots)
  • Several participants maintained averages above 1,000 points per badge
  • Top efficiency achievers often focused on high-value badges rather than quantity
  1. Strategic Approaches
  • High-efficiency participants (>900 points/badge) typically earned fewer badges but targeted high-value activities
  • Mid-range participants (700-900 points/badge) balanced quantity with value
  • Volume participants (<700 points/badge) earned many badges across all point values
  1. Level Distribution
  • Level 4 achievers showed varied strategies:Some focused on efficiency (e.g., Marvin0702: 1,115 points/badge)Others took a volume approach (e.g., RakeshDevani: 717.08 points/badge)
  • Lower level participants often showed high efficiency but fewer total badges

This analysis suggests successful participants employed different strategies:

  • “Selective Specialists” targeting high-value badges
  • “Balanced Achievers” mixing high and low-value activities
  • “Completionists” pursuing all available badges regardless of point value

points_vs_badges.png

  1. Linear Relationship
  • A clear linear trend shows that more badges generally correlate with more points
  • The slope varies, indicating different strategies for point accumulation
  • Most participants cluster along this main trend line
  1. Distinct Clusters
  • Low engagement (0-10,000 points, 0-20 badges): Dense cluster of casual participants
  • Mid-range (20,000-40,000 points, 40-80 badges): Moderate engagers spread more widely
  • High achievers (50,000+ points, 120+ badges): Distinct group of completionists
  1. Strategic Variations
  • Some participants show higher points-to-badges ratios (points above the trend line)
  • Others display badge-focused approaches (more badges relative to points)
  • The spread increases at higher levels, suggesting more diverse strategies among dedicated participants

This visualization reinforces the earlier findings about participant archetypes while showing the relationship between effort (badges) and achievement (points) in Devtoberfest 2024.
